Oriental Languages and Cultures
If you are not going on exchange during the bachelor's programme and are therefore following the second (BA2) and third (BA3) year of the standard learning track at Ghent University, you take a minor of 30 ECTS credits (divided as 15 ECTS credits in BA2 and 15 ECTS credits in BA3). Attention: exception for students within the Ghent University track Sinology (see further).
If you are going on exchange, the minor may be slightly more limited in scope. You take 15 ECTS credits in BA2, but you can replace the 15 ECTS credits of the minor in BA3 by elective course units abroad. If you cannot find enough course units abroad, you still take the necessary electives in Ghent. These may be from the same or a different minor.
You look in the study guide under the Bachelor's programme Oriental Languages and Cultures of your specific main subject. There you will find an overview of the minors within your study programme and you choose one.
Each main subject within Oriental Languages and Cultures offers different minors. In principle, it is not possible to choose a minor from another main subject. If you do wish to do so, you need to be able to motivate your choice. Please send an email with motivation to the learning track counsellor.

You can choose your minor from the following 7 offered minors:
Minor in Turkish
In the first year of your chosen minor, you take two mandatory course units from this minor with the * reference, namely 'Turkish: Language Practice A' and 'Turkish: Language Practice B'. In addition, you choose one course unit in this first year without an asterisk. In the second year of your chosen minor you again take two mandatory course units with the * reference, namely 'Turkish: Language Practice C' and 'Turkish: Language Practice D'. You supplement this with at least one course unit from the course units not yet chosen. Make sure to take into account the starting competencies described in the course sheet. For example, the course unit 'Turkish: Cultural History' is taught entirely in Turkish and as such can only be taken in the second year of the minor. If you were to take only three minor course units per year, you would end up with a minor package of 28 or 29 ECTS credits. Since a minor should always contain at least 30 ECTS credits, you will have to add another course unit in your second or third year.
